The Past Perfect Tense

The Past Perfect Tense is used to talk about a completed past activity which happened before another past action or a past point of time. (Pluskvamperfekat se korist za radnje koje su se zavrsile pre neke druge prosle radnje ili nekog trenutka u proslosti.)

We form it like this:

Positive: HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE

Negative: HADN ‘ T  (HAD NOT) + PAST PARTICIPLE

Question: HAD + subject + PAST PARTICIPLE

I had finished my homework by 6 pm yesterday.

John hadn’t started his project before his friend came to help him.

Tina wasn’t at home. Where had she gone?

REMEMBER:

After + past perfect, past simple

Before + past simple, past perfect

By / Until /Till + past perfect

I know you always complain about your homework but you still have to do it so get down to work and do the sentences below. Good luck!

Put the verbs in bracket in the past perfect or past simple.

  1. She _______ (make) a lot of mistakes before she ________ (realize) that.
  2. After the children ________ (finish) their breakfast, they _______ (run) out to play.
  3. When they _______ (reach) the station, the train _______ (already leave).
  4. I _______ (- can) come in because I _________ (forget) my keys.
  5. There ________ (be) nothing in the fridge because Mike ________ (not do) the shopping.
  6. After three days the cat came home. Where _____ it _______? (be)
  7. Mr Higgins _______ (tell) me that he ________ (work) in the USA a few years before.
  8. By the time their mother ________ (get) home, the children ________ (eat) all the sweets.
  9. After Jane _______ (wash) the dishes, she _______ (sit) down to watch TV.
  10. I ________ (turn) off the lights before I _______ (leave) the office.

And last but not the least, a nice poem for you to enjoy written by Mr Michael Swan.

Nothing had changed

When I went back to my old school

nothing had changed.

Well, OK,

the place had closed down.

Doors stood wide,

windows had lost their glass,

ceiling had fallen.

Travellers had camped in the dining-room,

and left their names on the walls.

Wind blew

through the rooms where I had sat for so long

and learnt so little.

Rubbish piled up in the corners.

But nothing important had changed.
